Alison Jepson, Gordon Hunt, Diana Doherty and Martin Lee after the opening concert of RIOSS 2011 at Great Lake Centre, Taupo

The Summer School opens with a concert given by the artists at St Andrews Church in Wellington, at 2.30pm on Tuesday, 3 January, 2017. Registration for summer school will be before the concert and it will be a great opportunity to meet fellow participants. Masterclasses will commence immediately after the concert in the Church followed by a BBQ for Summer School participants. The following day, the school will relocate to the Victoria University school of Music site, where the remainder of the summer school will be held. There will be masterclasses, chamber music, reed classes and more at the summer school and concerts given by both the Artists and the students during the week.

The daily programme will include:

Master classes with the artists      Master classes will be given by David Walter, Gordon Hunt, Diana Doherty, Eve Newsome, Alexandre Orguey and Robert Orr. These classes will include music from the solo oboe repertoire and orchestral excerpts. Participants in the Advanced Class (professionals, tertiary students and some of the advanced High School aged students) will play under the instruction of the Artists in these classes. Repertoire lists will be announced closer to the time. Allocation of which two master classes you play in, will be made in the order in which full payment is received.

Reed time   Reed making and adjusting, with guidance from reed-maker, Kexun Ge. Tools and cane will be available and there will be the opportunity to try the range of KGE reeds to decide which specifications suit you best.

Chamber music   Play in oboe trios, quartets (or larger, Handel's Water Music) each day, with coaching from the artists and associate artists. The makeup of these groups will be decided upon when enrolments close but you are most welcome to form your own groups, prior to the summer school. Just let us know!
